Lluís Serra Majem was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1959.
He received his PhD in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1987) and held a chair Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the Hospital Clinic of the University of Barcelona in 1988. He has held a chair in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria since 1995 and was Director of the University Institute of Biomedical and Health Research from 2013 to 2021.
From 1996 to 2012, he chaired the Mediterranean Diet Foundation, where he promoted and led the recognition of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. He is the author of nearly 800 indexed scientific articles and 60 books and is among the 100 most cited scientists in Spain and among the top 1 per thousand worldwide.
He is currently Rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain).

    United Nations COP28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action, December 2023, signed by 134 countries: “WE, HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT...We affirm that agriculture and food systems must urgently adapt and transform in order to respond to the imperatives of climate change.” This session will address the key elements of a planetary health perspective for food system transformation and introduce plans to create a platform for science-policy exchange, sharing of best practices, and solutions-oriented discussions aimed at supporting governments at the national level for progressive action-based policy on nutrition, foods, climate change, and health.
