Theo Anagnostopoulos is a science engager, educator, and social entrepreneur who has travelled to 103 countries across six continents. His work, particularly in underprivileged areas, focuses on combating scientific illiteracy via large-scale awareness projects and empowering educators and students through STEM education. Under his leadership as co-founder and general manager, SciCo—an international non-profit aiming to simplify science and promote science education—has reached more than 400,000 people across over 300 high-impact international outreach activities and programs. These include the Athens Science Festival, Circular Economy, Mind the Lab, Generation Next, and Celebrity Science, amongst others. Anagnostopoulos has been systematically working with the remote Pomak population in the Eastern Balkans, and with school children in remote islands of Greece, Southern Albania, and Eastern Tanzania. In 2022, with the Microplastics Team in National Geographic and the Ocean Exploration Trust’s From Shore to the Abyss expedition in the Pacific Ocean, he broadcast work onboard E/V Nautilus internationally, reaching thousands of students including all schools nationwide in Greece. Moreover, he is the co-founder of Theta Communications, a company specialising in experiential training of employees. He holds a Ph.D. in medical genetics from King’s College London and is currently a visiting researcher at Leiden University’s Department of Science Communication in the Netherlands. He is an Ashoka Fellow and received the 2017 British Council UK Alumni Social Impact Award, the 2019 Newcastle University Alumni Impact Award, and the 2019 Mariano Gago European Network of Science Centers and Museums Award. Science Engagement Winner for the Falling Walls Lab’s 2018, 2019, and 2022 competitions, he was also listed in the Explorers Club 50 Individuals Changing the World in 2022.
