Ilias Tsakiris, since 2005, is Chief Executive Officer of Hellenic Hull Management Ltd, and since 2016, of the American Hellenic Hull Insurance Co. Ltd. He has almost 30 years of professional experience in the marine insurance sector. Mr Tsakiris was trained as a Master Mariner at the Hydra Merchant Marine Academy, Europe’s oldest marine academy, and he holds a degree in Maritime Studies from Liverpool John Moores University.
He started his career as an apprentice Deck Officer, where he moved up the ranks, then went ashore to work in London as an average adjuster. In 1995, he joined Hellenic Hull Management, the managers of the predecessor insurer Hellenic Hull Mutual Association Plc, currently the American Club Europe.
Notable achievements include overseeing dynamic growth for Hellenic Hull, to an innovative mutual insurer. The launching and management on behalf of the American P&I Club, of the American Hellenic Hull Insurance Co Ltd in Cyprus. The election as a Council Member of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) and subsequently the election to Chairman of the Ocean Hull Committee, being also the first ever Greek or Cypriot to hold such position.
He also serves as member of the Steering Committees of the Poseidon Principles for Marine Insurance and Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative.
Under his leadership the company became member of United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEPFI) – Principles for Sustainable Insurance, UNEPFI – Sustainable Blue Economy Finance Initiative, Net Zero Insurance Alliance and UN Global Compact.
He is a visiting lecturer in various academic institutions, such as the World Maritime University, University of Piraeus, University of Aegean, and a contributor in various international publications and esteemed speaker in major international shipping fora.
