Deren Sanivar

Global Sustainability Science Student, Outreach Coordinator at ZFWCY

UWC, Cyprus

Deren Sanıvar is dedicated to transformative education and sustainability, enriched by a multifaceted background spanning interdisciplinary studies, activism, and community engagement. A proud alumna of the United World Colleges in Mostar (Class of 2022), Deren embarked on a journey of catalysing positive change early in their career.
Hailing from Cyprus, Deren brings a unique perspective shaped by their upbringing in interculturalism and a post-conflict society. This background has endowed them with a skill for viewing problems from a global standpoint, fostering a deep understanding of interconnectedness and empathy.
During a transformative gap year post-graduation, Deren collaborated closely with the UWC Cyprus committee, leading various initiatives centred around identity, community empowerment, and environmental stewardship. From orchestrating workshops on power dynamics, gender diversity, and conflict resolution to volunteering in scholarship selection processes for incoming UWC students.
Beyond their contributions to UWC Cyprus, Deren extended their sphere of influence in September 2022 by assuming a role on the board of directors at Zero Food Waste Cyprus, an informal initiative dedicated to addressing local food waste challenges and supporting marginalized communities across the island. Their hands-on approach to sustainability transcends mere activism
it permeates their academic pursuits as well.
Having initially pursued studies in environmental engineering, Deren later transitioned to Global Sustainability Science at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Currently delving into Governance & Societal Transformation, Deren's interdisciplinary education underscores their resolve to bridge the realms of natural and social sciences in the pursuit of sustainable development.
Looking ahead, Deren envisions continuing their advocacy for transformative education, fostering approaches that remain adaptable and responsive to the ever-evolving global challenges, all while remaining firmly grounded in the principles of sustainability.
