Andronike Makres

Assistant Professor of Ancient History

University of the Peloponnese, Greece

A graduate of the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University
of Athens, she holds a PhD From Oxford University (U.K) titled: “The Institution of Choregia in Classical Athens”.
She specializes in Ancient Greek History and Epigraphy and has participated in many academic conferences in Greece and abroad. Her research focuses primarily on the history of Ancient Athens with an emphasis on the political institutions and their development in antiquity. She is also active in the field of the history of the Peloponnese in the Hellenistic and Roman Periods with an emphasis on Ancient Messenia and Lakonia (political and social institutions etc.).

Her scholarly publications include “Dionysiac Festivals in Athens and the Financing of Comic Performances” in the The Oxford Handbook of Greek and Roman Comedy (eds M. Fontaine and A. Scafuro),Oxford 2014, the publication of the choragic inscriptions in the corpus Inscriptiones Graecae. Voluminis II et III Editio Tertia (De Gruyter (2014) and the book titled “Power and the People. Five Lessons from the Birthplace of Democracy” Quercus Publishing (2019) (UK) and “Power and the People. The Enduring Legacy of Athenian Democracy” Pegasus Books (2020) (USA) co-authored with Alev Scott and in Modern Greek translation «Ισχύς και Λαός, 5 μαθήματα από την γενέτειρα τηςδημοκρατίας» ( Διόπτρα, Αθήνα 2020).
