Dimitris Kouretas was born in Patras in 1962.
He studied Pharmacy in Patras and then got his PhD in Biochemistry from the Chemistry Department (A.P.Th., 1989).
From 1990-1992 he worked as a researcher at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Since 1996 he has been a faculty member at the University of Thessaly
Today he is Professor of Physiology of Animal Organisms and Toxicology and Director of the laboratory of the same name, in the Department of Biochemistry-Biotechnology of the University of Thessaly and lives in Larissa.
He works as a researcher in the field of studying the mechanisms of interactions of nutritional elements with the body at the molecular level.
He has published 250 articles in international journals[ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=Kouretas+D ] and has 13,700 references and h index 65, Feb 2023[ https://scholar.google. com/citations?user=CifMx6IAAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao].
He is the founder of the spin-off company of the University of Thessaly, Foodoxys, focused on functional nutrition (www.foodoxys.com).
His work in food innovation has been awarded in Greece and the EU.
In 2013-2014 he was deputy Rector of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Athens and President of the Innovation Council in the Region of Thessaly (2013-2015).
He is currently serving as the Governor of Thessaly since January of 2024.
